You should tell him. What if someone else tells him? Or what if you picked up an STD? Furthermore, your boyfriend deserves to know the truth so that he can decide whether or not he wants to stay in a relationship with you. Let him make an informed choice.

It depends on the reason for why you cheated ultimately. If you want to make the relationship work, don't tell him that you cheated. If you don't want to continue the relationship, still don't tell him but leave him. Telling him is going to hurt his feelings regardless and won't do any good.
