I put newspaper under my sons chair and guided his hands with the utensils when he was about 6 months. Kids make messes, so don't forget the newspaper and towels!

This is actually very simple. Once a baby reaches 6 months they can be started on solid foods. As your child develops his or her ability to grasp items, try putting ease to swallow foods in front of him. Think of things like Cheerios or little bits of soft banana or avocado. These items are attractive to your little one.

Put the baby in a high chair and put a few small food pieces on the tray. Use foo dsuch as small cereals like cheerios which will dissolve in their mouths. A child will be curious and naturally pick up the food and put it in his mouth. Do not give the baby too much food at one time.

Start with puffs that dissolve in their mouth. Then move on to small or soft foods like Cherrios or banana pieces. Show them chewing motions. Baby will mimic.

The great thing about this is that babies put EVERYTHING IN THEIR MOUTHS! You just need to provide safe age appropriate foods and responsible supervision so that the baby can learn safely.

A baby becomes curious about the food you are eating about 6-8 months of age. They will grab for your food. Give them a soft food to hold in their hand and put in their mouth. An older baby can hold a spoon while sitting in the highchair with a bib around their neck. Let them get messy!

The most important thing to do to help your baby learn to self feed is to give him lots of opportunities to do so.
