How should I go about painting plexiglass?

Do I need to treat the plexiglass or use special paint?

You would first sand it down a bit like you would any thing else you are going to paint, not too much. Then you have to get a special plexiglass paint and apply.

Well, you can apply vinegar to the plexiglass first. Then let that dry. Then you would have to use some special paint which you can purchase online or at any home hardware store. This special paint should be formulated specifically for the plexiglass. You don't want to use any other paint.

Clean the plexiglass well with a weak mixture of TriSodiumPhosphate (TSP) and water, rinse well and allow to dry. Acrylic paints work best on plexiglass. The paint can be applied using rollers, rags, brushes or any other method that gives you the effect you are looking for.

You should use acrylic paint for plexiglass because it will adhere to the plexiglass and not damage it. Oil paint takes too long to dry and could melt the plexiglass. If the product is going to be used outside then a clear waterproof sealant should be put over the paint to protect it.

Try this trick to protect your paint if you're gonna keep it outdoors etc. Just put another transparent plexiglass over the painted surface and voila! you have great paint and finish protection.  add a comment

if you need to simply paint them one color then use a primer and then spray paint them with the color of your choice. However if you're looking at art-painting your plexiglass you will need a slightly more complex procedure.

Try treating the plexiglass with some steel wool which you can get in any hardware store. Treat it till it is a little dull. You can then use epoxy enamel paint to do your painting on the plexiglass. Make sure it does not drip and dries quickly.

Hi, this would affect the overall finish and look of what you do. So it's not good if you need a glossy finish.  add a comment

Yes, you will require special paint that is carefully formulated for the glass. You can do this at home and if you require the paint, you are better off shopping at Home Depot. The paint will need to be applied thinly as the surface is quite delicate. Then, go over with a heavy coat.
