Your male Shih Tzu should be at least two years old and should be examined by your Vet as the female should also be certified healthy. Any younger the 2 years old could create problems with the male not being able to mate with the female and not conceive a litter.

Males should be at least two, females at least three. Males under two are puppies themselves and it's best to let a dog fully develop if you don't want to ruin the bloodline and prevent health issues. A good example would be a Shih Tzu from a real breeder vs. one from a pet store which are puppy mill dogs.

Depending on the size of the dog, your shih tzu should be able to breed between 12 and 15 months of age. Sexual maturity varies by animal and by the size of the animal. Sexual maturity starts around 6 months of age. He will be able to breed for approximately 12 years.

You should wait until your dog is between the ages of 1 and 2 before you begin to breed. This allows for any genetic faults to show up such as disease's or temperament issues. Before breeding your Shih Tzu, you should have them checked out by a veterinarian. You may also wish to check with a professional breeder for advice.
