The first version of Pokemon was released back in 1996 for the Gameboy. Currently it is the second best selling video game franchise next to Mario. It has spawned multiple shows as well as movies and toys

The Pokemon franchise is 14 years old, starting in 1996 with the release of Pokemon Red/Green for the GameBoy in Japan; Red/Blue in the US. As for the age of any particular Pokemon, the oldest currently appears to be Arceus, who legendarily created the Pokemon Universe.

Pokemon (or Pocket Monsters) was created by Satoshi Tajiri in 1996. The first games were Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue for the Gameboy system. Pokemon Yellow, also for the Gameboy system was developed later.
