As a rule you should change the filter at least once a year, however twice a year might be more feasable if it is used alot.

Anytime it starts to develope a strange odor, starts to fall apart or makes noise on its own with out any outside help

It depends how much you use it, YOU CAN DO BETWEEN 20.000 o 30.000 miles. life since the filter is between that mileage and also the place where you find, so take better care of your bike and a clean filter will give better performance and long life to the motor
