It depends on how fast your hair grows, but you should probably go back every 3-4 weeks if you dont want your roots to show in your natural color. If you just highlight streaks in your hair, then you should go back monthly as they start to fade.

I think it will vary based on the nature of your hair, the type of highlights you got etc. Really, you should just monitor how your hair looks, and when it fails to meet your standards, its back to the salon for some touch-ups.
