they probably get caught when a plane is at the right altitude and the birds are in a flying pattern.

what a question. birds have different times that they migrate. it depends upon the type of bird that you are talking about. i would think that the timing of an aircraft would have to be just right for the birds to get caught in the jet engine. also the correct altitude is important.
