The maximum dose for an average adult is 30 mg/day. The main side effect of the drug is blurred vision, dizziness, and drowsiness. The most serious adverse effect of overdose for hydrocodone is cardiac arrest.

Overdosing on hydrocodone is extremely difficult, since it is usually not available on its own. If you live in the United States, hydrocodone usually comes in tablet form with another analgesic (like acetaminophen in Vicodin or ibuprofen in Vicoprofen). These drugs are the limiting factors in terms of overdosing (4000mg acetaminophen or 3200mg ibuprofen), not the hydrocodone.

The doctor will tell you what amount is appropriate. Tolerance to hydrocodone can occur even with short-term use. Take it as prescribed by a doctor. No more than that. If you've forgotten that info, five milligram prescriptions usually state one or two every four to six hours as needed for pain.

The most you should take usually if it is prescribed 1 pill ever six hours or as needed for pain. You should not take more than 4 a day. This is the normal amount of this medication. Only really take it when you feel that you have pain that won't go away with anything else.

This depends on what medicine you are prescribed with hydrocodone. They usually have acetaminophen, which plays a factor in dose. If you're taking the 5/500 (5 mg hydrocodone, 500 mg acetaminophen) the maximum dose is 1-2 every 4-6 hours, with a maximum of 8 pills in 24 hours. Consult pharmacist.

If you are not sure, then call the pharmacist who filled the prescription for you. Pain medications should not be used unless prescribed to you!
