The typical rule is 1 inch of fish per 1 gallon of water. However, this does not mean you should put a 5 inch fish in a 5 gallon tank. You want your fish to have enough room to swim comfortably. The exact number of fish depends on what size fish you have, but no more than 2 or 3.

The typical rule is 1 inch of fish per gallon of water. If you pick out fish that stay smaller than 2 inches, you could fit about three in the tank.
