There are 6236 main Ayahs in the Quran and there are an additional 113 repetitive phrases called bismillah which are sometimes included to give a grand total of 6349, and sometimes omitted from the total.

The word ayah is Arabic for sign or miracle. The word is usually used in reference to each one of the 6236 verses in the Quran. The muslimpeople hold each ayah as a sign from Allah. Muslims agree that thousands had memorized the Quran but it was put into a single text shortly after Muhammand's death.
