How long you run the pool filter depends on your water. If the water is dirty or has algae, you will want to run it continuously until it is clear. If the water is clean you can just run it during the day and turn it off at night.

To insure the maximum benefit of filtration, you should allow your pools filter to run as long as possible. However, if you are not comfortable with 24/7 filter usage, you should allow it to run between 4-8 hours a day in the summer. For year round pools, let the filter 4-6 hours a day.

It really depends on your pool size and pump flow rate, but a good number is to aim for four hours or so a day.
