The auction does not happen until the foreclosure proccess has run its course and the judge has entered a judgement. Usually the auction is scheduled thirty to ninety days soon after that.

Different states have different time frames outlined for foreclosure. Checking with the county court house or a local attorney would give you the exact time frame. Some states are very quick, will other states take considerably longer. Also, there can be delays in auctioning off a property depending on claims on the property.

Sadly, I have been through this trauma, and it is very QUICK. It can be less than 3 months from your default. You have extensive notification before auction, but the process is very rapid. You might buy time by filing bankruptcy, but only if you have some recourse to making payments. Do NOT ignore any paperwork or notifications.

As far as I know it can take months. I've known of people that stay in their bank repo-ed home for up to 7 months before they are forced out.
