You should boil a mouthpiece for 30 seconds, then put it in cold water for three seconds, then bit down on it and suck on it. Then put it in cold water to set it.

To ensure a mouthpiece does not melt you should first boil you water then let it sit for 30 seconds. Next, put the mouthpiece in the water for no longer than 10 seconds. You should now be able to safely place it in your mouth.

Mouthpieces all require various amounts of boil time to reach adequate softness to meld to your teeth. Some can be boiled for a couple minutes and soften enough to meld, while others require several minutes. If the mouth piece starts to lose form without your assistance, remove it from the water. Let it sit before you meld it.

I would suggest following the instructions on the mouthpiece package. However, the time it takes is usually about two minutes.

Assuming what you're using is a standard plastic mouthpiece, you should only boil it for about 2-3 minutes. Then it should be soft enough for you to sink your teeth into it and have it take the shape of your teeth in order for you to start using without any trouble.
