Most communities have an over abundance of non-native species. Some of these plants found their way to their new homes centuries ago, while some are more recent. You could look for books that deal with habitat and environment in your community or region. You could also call your local agricultural extension office. Extension offices are usually located in universities.

Being able to tell if a plant is native to your area would most likely require first identifying the plant and then searching on the internet to see its origins.
