There are seven tax brackets in California. The tax rate on income up to $7168 is 1%. Tax rates for higher brackets are 2% for income up to $16994, 4% for up to $26821, 6% for up to $37233, 9.3% for up to $1 million, and 10.3% for more than $1 million. This is higher than most states.

The highest rate in California is 9.6 % and with Social Security not being taxable and Self Employment tax not charged it is not outrageous.
