How does using different fertilizers effect plant growth?

Depending what the plant is lacking, nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus will supply the "building blocks" the plant needs for growth. The bag of fertilizer will list percents and ratios of these nutrients and how they apply to different conditions. Specialized compounds will address other needs the plant lacks.

Each fertilizer is different because of the amounts of nutrients nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium that it contains. The label should tell you what fertilizer is best for which plants.
