How does the telephone work?

I don't understand what connects one with another.

Sound waves vibrate the microphone and are transformed into electrical impulses. Next the impulses travel through wire and switches. Finally they connect to the speaker and are retransformed into sound.

When you speak, the membrane on the phone vibrates and creates the waves, which are "remade" as sound from the signal on the other end on "hearing" membrane
