S. has been a leader in technological modernization with the invention of mass production (factories) and later with innovation in computer technology. Technology is central to people's lives in the U. S. In art, modernization has to do with challenging 19th century art forms; today's "anything goes" in art reflects this.

There's less family time because everyone has cell phones and netbooks; people sometimes know more about their online friends than about the friends in their own community. Modernization has helped in the field of medicine and science by bringing new drugs and procedures to the marketplace.
