On a laptop the modem will have a flat integrated antenna, and the EM waves are able to easily pass through the plastic casing. On a desktop computer there often is an external omni-directional antenna located on the rear on the back of the add-on card, usually because the metal grounding of the case would attenuate an wireless signals.
