A windmill works by capturing energy from the wind and using it to turn a generator. A generator is a series of magnets that create the electricity.

A windmill creates electricity by the use of a generator/alternator. The wind turns the fins on the windmill which in turn rotates a vertical shaft that is connected to a generator. There are typically gears between the windmill shaft and the generator shaft. This is to increase the speed of the generator.
