The quarterback needs to study defensive schemes provided by the coaching staff. He must know what routes his receivers are running and anticipate where the defenders will be.

A quarterback usually learns by watching film, and most of all from experience. Typically the quarterback takes certain things into consideration, such as how many linemen/linebackers/DB's whether its a 5-2 or 4-3 defense. Where the safeties are, whether they're playing deep or in the box.

Through experience and practice. You can watch game film a lot, but if you want to learn while you play, you can try and read the motion of the players and where they line up.
