Encourage them all you can and join the library and take books out on a weekly basis. As they progress get harder books and subscribe to magazines.

Ask your child's teacher for suggestions on ways you can help your children practice reading. You can visit the library and get books to read at home.

There is a window of opportunity during which children are ready to learn to read. The best way to start reading is to read to the children, talking about the words on the page and the sounds that letters make in similar words. Make it fun. Pressuring children to perform to provide bragging rights is not a good idea.

Start with simple children's books. Have them read to you so that way they learn, and encourage them as they tried to read, point to a word and read it to them, then let them try. The simpler the book the better.

Start with pure phonics. Expect to focus on vowels, then consonant. Use words or stories they are familiar with so that they can spell out the word and then guess if they are slightly off in their estimation of the word. Expect to spend an hour or so per day on phonics.

I starting reading at the age of 4... I barely remember how it was done okay show them pictures with the words on top & say the word! Try it until they get how to read :)

At that age reading can be very frustrating so the key is to make it fun and let them read funny stories.
