Preferably, you follow the familiar story arc leading through increasing difficulty until the climax then back home to the conclusion, making sure to keep rhyme and rhythm throughout.

Epic refers to both length and subject matter. First, find "epic" subject matter, such as battles between gods, the rise and fall of nations, or the creation of the universe. Then, it should be a poem that is as long as a novel, for epic length. Any other things (such as rhyme and meter or lack thereof) are just details.

It is a long narrative about a hero's journey that presents his adventures in a heroic framework. "The hero's journey" is a classic structure and renders the hero transformed.
