220V appliances need to be fed from a double pole breaker with appropriate rating. In connecting these you will have two 120volt hot wires and a neutral wire.

First thing you need to do before attempting any electrical work is turn off the electric service so you do not get a server shock or be electrocuted. Then read the instructions about the appliance wiring requirements. Determine the correct size of wiring and number of conductors needed. Next -is this is a direct connect or receptacle installation.

Using proper gauge wire, 3 or 4 conductors are used, depending on the appliance. One for ground, 2 for the properly rated double circuit breaker, and perhaps one for neutral.
