You push the lever or button and throw it out like a normal rod, as the line is going out keep your thumb over the line slightly so you can stop the line from going out just as the fishing weight hits the water. This is how you prevent backlash. Just keep your thumb very close to the line.

You use a baitcast reel by first getting a practice plug and a limper line. Rod choice is the next thing to consider. Then set a spool tension on a reel,tight enough so the lure will not fall.
