The process varies slightly on different laptops, check the manufacturer's web site for specific instructions. In general power down the laptop, remove the battery, remove the hard drive access panel, remove the screw(s) holding the existing hard drive in place, slide the old hard drive out, slide the new hard drive in, replace retaining screw(s), then replace access panel.

YOu must first find the type of harddrive you laptop uses (SATA or IDE, the speed, etc.) and find one of the same type, then you can power off the laptop, unplug everything, and turn it upside down. Near one edge there should be screws and a label to symbolize it (HDD maybe), unscrew these, pull it out, and change it.

Usually you can get access to the harddrive from below. Open some screws to take out the hard disk holding mechanism and replace the hardisk in it.
