The proper format generally includes your name, title, and address at the top of the page, followed by three lines, the date, two more lines, the recipient's name, title, and address, two more lines, and a greeting followed by two more lines and the body. Be brief and polite.

this depends on what kind of formal letter you are writing. Regardless of which kind, Microsoft Word has a number of templates to choose from. My advice would be that when you open Word, go to file, then select new document. Then, select choose from template, and there will be pre-formatted letter types for whatever you need.

A formal letter requires a strong language mixed in with good vocabulary. It should be a top priority to check for any spelling errors.

Label your letter with the date in the upper right hand corner. Begin your letter off formaly with either "to whom it may concern" or "Dear ___." Be sure to indent the first word of your letter. Sign the bottom with "sincerly ___."
