To treat a sore muscle you should be vigilant of what type of soreness you are experiencing. Be sure that you do not have an accute injury. Simple soreness can be treated with heat and proper rest.

Alternating warm and cold compresses can help with muscle pain. Heat brings more blood circulation to heal the muscle with nutrients and debris removal. Cold reduces pain and inflammation.

That depends on what you consider funny smelling. Icy Hot is nice but smells. Other treatments include, first, some Motrin to cover up the symptoms, or second, though it seems counterintuitive, go for a jog. Jogging will help clear out some of the acids that help make a muscle sore.
