The best choice is prescription meds from your vet for pain control as over the counter medications are often toxic to dogs. The only moderately safe product over the counter is buffered aspirin and that is not safe to use when there is gastric upset, anticipated surgery, or bleeding. Sometimes a cold compress can be used to control pain.

It depends on the source/cause of the pain, but the first thing to do is to take the dog to your vet. The vet will be able to correctly diagnose the source of the pain rather than just treating it as a symptom. As for the pain management, the usual medication is metacam.

If your dog is in great pain, it would be a good idea to take him to a vet. I realize vets can be expensive, however, if you've taken in a pet, it's your responsibility to care properly for him. Animal cruelty is against the law and if the animal is suffering you need to take care of him.

You give him the medication the vet has prescribed. Let him lay around and not expect him to be up and running around. Try to keep him very still. He will know how much he can tolerate. Let him tell you when he wants to go out.
