How do you teach proper handwashing for kids?

Handwashing is very important to keep our kids personal hygiene at a good level. I started with my kids when they were very young. Handwashing became a routine task before every meal. Before we have our meal we take turns to wash hands: turn on tap and rub some soap on hands, then wash inside and outside.. rinse and ready!

Children need to know that hand washing is especially important after they have gone to the restroom or before eating any food. Give them their own bottle of liquid soap and encourage them to use it frequently with warm water. Children can also be taught to wash their hands immediately after playing outside.

The idea is to make the task fun. If you make it fun the child will want to wash their hands. I sing a song which has all the proper steps to wash hands. You sing the song while washing hands. There is a great Barney episode about this topic which could help you with teaching hand washing techniques.
