The literal term in French is "grand-mere," "mere" is mother. My kids called their French-Canadian grandmother "Me-mere. " In Louisiana and parts of the south, "Me-maw" is popular. But the formal French translation is "Grand-mere. "

Grandmother is spelled "grand-mere," with an accent grave above the first "e. " In Canada, you might refer to your grandmother as "meme," with accent aigu above both "e"s.
