Instead of rolling your hair from the front to the back start in a circular motion around the head. Start rolling your hair from were you are going to part your hair.
Get long rods in the thickness you want. Take a small piece of hair and start at the bottom of the rod. Twist your hair around the rod so it is angled and fills up the long rod from top to bottom (same as you would with a curling iron).
Use spiral perm rods. Take small sections of hair, starting at the crown and working down. Hair is rolled vertically. I suggest a salon or beauty school, it's hard work.
