For almost all brands and models you need to open it up completely in order to change the CMOS battery, because it is almost allways located under the keyboard or close to the mousepad. Be very careful and, if you can, find some information on the internet first about the model you own so you wont mess up.

The CMOS battery in a laptop is generally located on the backside of the mother board. Pull the cord and swap out with a new one.

The only way to replace the laptop's CMOS battery is to have an access to your laptop's motherboard, and look for the battery. Usually near the speakers.
