The best way to replace a bad inner tie rod is to take off the entire tie rod. You can then trace the inner and outer tie rod on a piece of cardboard to give you the exact legnth. then you can put the new one on and measure without needing an allignment.

This will depend on vehicle make and model. Most foreign models and late model domestics, you must replace inner and outer tie rods at same time due to new designs. These cars are built for efficiency. However, older models and many pick ups can be replaced separately. Disengage inner tie rod from the outer and axle. Replace with new parts.

If you're going to do it yourself, you should buy a service manual for your particular vehicle. It will lay out the exact procedure. Otherwise I would recommend taking it to your dealership, as it will probably also need an alignment.

The basic procedure includes removing the wheel to gain access to the suspension, then unbolting the tie rod from the spindle, removing the tie rod with a specific tool, and finally replacing the tie rod. Not know what kind of car you have I can't be more specific.

jack car up to remove wheel to the suspension. unbolt tie rod from spindle to remove tie with the correct tools to replace the old ones. If you have a late model its best to put the inner and tie rods on simultaneously, cause of new designs.
