The best way is to rent or buy an upholstery cleaner. First, vacuum the piece, then use the attachment on the cleaner, filling the tank with water plus cleaning solution. You will see the brownish tar and nicotine in the dirty water. Fabreeze is a wonderful product to keep on hand to spray away odors on an ongoing basis.

There are commercially avaible cleaning solutions that will pull the smell out of the furniture. Check with a local maid service, or cleaning company.
