If you are talking about recording a video of a game, then you can use Fraps. If you are running a high end game, then expect a slight decreased frame rate. It is pretty much the standard program used for this. The resulting video is compatible with Windows Media Player, but can be converted using any number of free programs.

Depending on what platform your using you could download a recorder from the internet and install it onto the hard drive.
