Take special slide into glucometer (turn meter on). Prick clean fingertip with specially provided lancet. Place blood droplet unto strip and read 'numbers' shown on screen. Depending on the time of day as well as time of meal numbers may vary. Before a meal the diabetic reading may range between 70-130 mg/dl or less than 180 after a meal.

Check your meter's instructions for coding your test strips. Take a sample of blood into the test strip according to directions. The meter will then come up with a number. That's your blood sugar. Check with your doctor about what readings are appropriate for you.

First try reading the manual that came with the new glucometer. If you've lost it, just try pricking your finger with the item and checking the reading you've got. You can compare this before or after a meal to ensure you're doing it correctly (the number will move).
