Micrometers are read in inches and out to thousandths of an inch. First you read the number indicated along the length of the handle this reading should be in fractions of an inch. Next you read what the dial indicates this reading will be in 100ths and thousands of an inch. These are precise instruments.

First you read the position of the pointer or marking point on the long flat part that looks similar to a ruler. Most are marked out in inches and 100ths. Next you add in the reading on the dial or digital read out this is in thousandths. So if your reading is under one inch then you will read thousandths.
