The way I go about reading a detailed elevation map is by first reading the legend box or key box and determining the different colors that categorizes the mountains and the elevation on the maps.

The map can be read by looking at the lines that resemble concentric "shapes". Each line represents the height above sea level, indicated by a number along the lines.

By "elevation map," I imagine you mean topographic map. Check the map for a key in one of the lower corners. It will tell you what the lines mean. Note the contour lines--every fifth one is labeled with an elevation. The map will also have a declination alignment for use with your compass (sometimes North isn't "really" North!)

Well, the more the numbers increase, then the higher the elevation is. But be careful though, when the elevation increases, it is very difficult to breathe up there. You may need some sort of glucose to get you going. Any type of sugar or carbohydrate will help you in this hiking journey.

Lines on an elevation map connect points with the same altitude, so examine your route on the map to see which sections climb or drop and by how much.

The elevation map uses colors to represent the height of certain areas. Look at the color code to see how high the elevation is for where you're climbing.

Read the key. Notice how land closest to sea level is darkgreen. Land is farthest away from sea level is dark brown. Look the map. Find elevation regions indicated on the key. Find two highest mountain peaks & mountain pass. Follow the flow of the Indus river. Because it is easiest place to get one side from the rage of other.
