To lay shingles you need to stagger the seams so they do not overlap. In addition to roofing nails use a sealant to help insure the the shingles stick well.

To shingle a roof, you can start with bare plywood, or go over existing shingles(2-3 layers maximum depending on code). For plywood, first put up a layer of tar paper, starting from the lowest point and working up, overlapping bottom over top. Same basic principle for the shingles.

Shingles are complicated to put up, you use an overlapping technique when you install them. Some times plywood will have to be replaced if it is rotten. Tar paper is laid over the plywood, then the shingles.

Beginning with a clean wood deck, nail down a layer of felt paper, overlapping by around 6". Then apply the shingles in rows, beginning each new row with a 1/2 shingle overlap from the one below it. Check often down the rows for nice square looking overlaps.

Take off the old shingles. Start at the bottom of the roof and go up. Each shingle has a nail area and only shingle nails cat be used.

Make a level line on the roof near bottom edges. Lay shingles along the line, lap next row over first row making sure to stagger shingle seams.

When you put up shingles you are going to need to put a real thick layer of tar down and then put the shingle on and drive a nail in.
