You measure for a carpet using a carpet tape measure. If you do not have one, then get one. They are quite handy.

The best way to measure for carpet is to measure the two longest dimensions in the room; which could include measuring into closets. Make sure to measure at least into the middle of any doorways that lead to other areas, the carpet will have to extend into those areas, which is past the wall.
