How do you make fondant icing?

Does it have to be rolled, or can you frost a cake with it?

There are two types of fondant: Rolled and poured. They are made of the same ingredients, but rolled fondant, which is typically used in covering cakes and making fondant flowers or figures, is a thicker, dough-like substance, while poured fondant is thinner, and easily melted to be poured over cakes and petit fours.

Fondant icing is usually bought at baker's supply shop and is very hard to make at home. It has to be rolled then stuck to the cake.
