How do you make a personal budget work?

You could write out everything you spend everyday. After seeing it written out, you might be able to cut back on some things easier. Also, if you budget certain amounts for certain categories, like $50 for groceries, put it in it's own envelope. You won't be able to spend more than what's in the envelope.

Consider switching to the cash envelope system after hiding your credit and debit cards; you cannot overspend if you do not have the fall back of a card.

I make a budget work for me writing every purchase down. Even if its only for a buck I still write it down. After that I write down and pay all bills. Whatever is left over after bills i know thats what I have left to spend for the week.

You may just need to reward yourself for being disciplined. Try rewarding yourself with $1 each week you stick with the budget and save up for a fun night out.
