How do you learn to play guitar using tabs?

Tabs outline the six strings on a standard guitar, and the numbers on the tab indicate which fret on a particular string is supposed to be played. One can figure out the notes this way, but because tablature is limited, the rhythm can essentially only be figured out by listening to the actual song.

Each line represents a string on the guitar. The bottom line represents the lowest string. The top line represents the highest notes. Each number on the line is the fret.
