Homemade treatment are messy but effective. For example, olive oil or vaseline. Downside to this is hard to wash out. A pesticide free treatment with Dimethicone Shampoo will kill nits. However everything must be cleaned to avoid re-occurrence. To really ensure eradication you should use permethrin, it kills nits and eggs.

Nits, or lice egg cases, appear whenever live lice are present. After treatment, if there are still nits, another treatment may be necessary. If a thorough comb-out after treatment reveals no nits, you can assume they are gone. Do another comb-out the next day to be sure.

Lice eggs, called "nits" can easily be seen on the hair shaft. They will be glued to the hair shaft and cannot be easily moved. The lice and nymphs need to be treated and the individual needs to be checked weekly for reinfestation.

The eggs are not invisible. They are these small white nits(sic) that can be seen by examining a scalp, along the forehead hairline, and by brushing hair with a comb. They are gone when they are no longer visible using these means, after shampooing with lice shampoo of course.

Lice is very hard to get rid of. You must use a special shampoo that kills both lice and their eggs. Then you need to use the special comb to comb out all the nits. This is time consumming. Sometimes you will need a magnify glass to really tell if you have removed them all.

The eggs are not always visible to the naked eye. You should see a doctor a week after any self treatments to ensure a 100% cure rate.
