first thing is to check the bottom and make sure its not rotted out cause who wants rotten fruit. when you look on the surface you will see very little green in the webbing. a simple tap or two to the outside should produce a hollow sound if the center has contracted and filled with seeds.

Most varieties of cantaloupe will drop from the vine when ripened. Otherwise, a ripened cantaloupe should be have a slight bit of softness at the blossom. You can also check for that sweet cantaloupe scent before picking. Remember, a cantaloupe will only ripen slightly if you pick it first and then let stand. Let it vine mature for best results.
