The type of lily may affect whether one is able to prevent a lily bud from closing. If it is a species of day lily, its blossoms will only last one day. However, if it is not of the day lily variety, planting the bulb in a area with adequate drainage and abundant sunlight will encourage longer blossom times.

Lilies are day bloomers. They naturally open around 9 a. m. and close around 4 p. m. They will also close if rained or watered on. On dark, cloudy days, they may not open at all. Generally, their flowers rest on the water surface. Be sure to use fertilizer tabs in the pots to keep them blooming throughout the season.

You can't keep lilies from closing. That is just something natural that will happen no matter what you try to do.
