How do you investigate smells in your basement?

Trial and error, mostly. Just sniff around and try to track the scent. If you can't find it and you use gas/fuel, call your provider! You don't want a leak!

First of all I will confirm the smell is it some electric wire burning or has some animal died. If its electric wire burning I will disconnect main power and call a electrician to fix it. In case of died animal I will ask my maid to remove it.
