The best thing to get rid of the damp smell that you are suffering through is to apply baking soda to the affected area (if a small area). Then to try to ventilate and air out the area as best you can. I'm sure this would be hard if it was in the basement.

You need to hire a professional cleaner to get rid of hte life threatening mold. You can also get rid of the smell by throwing away wet things.

The first thing to do is get rid of any moisture and repair any aspect that may cause future leaking. The area should be dry and well ventilated. Wipe down surfaces with one part bleach and three parts water. Ventilation and natural light will help.
